Sessions are anywhere from 30-60 minutes in length, with most people having a 60 minute appointment. When you first start counseling, you will typically meet once a week. As you make progress toward your goal(s) you may end up meeting once every two weeks, every three weeks, or once per month.
During the first session we complete your intake paperwork, discuss confidentiality, discuss appointment scheduling, and begin to hear about your story. The next few sessions help us generate and focus on your goal for counseling, commonly called a “Treatment Plan.” Your treatment plan is usually measurable and contains steps for completion. The following are examples of counseling goals:
- To learn 3 tools for communicating better with my spouse.
- For my teen to comply with household expectations 75% of the time or more.
- To increase my self-confidence from a 1 to a 7 or more on a 1 to 10 scale.
Counseling sessions will continue until your goal is completed, or if you decide you want to be done with counseling.
You can always come back for counseling too. It could be for a new reason, or, for a refresher or check in on the work you accomplished, commonly called a “maintenance session.”
